Liposuction May Reduce Triglycerides

Did you see this latest news from The Los Angeles Times posted today? The “Booster Shots” blog reports that liposuction “may…reduce harmful fat circulating in the blood,” according to research presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Investigators measured “triglyceride levels in” nearly 230 individuals undergoing the procedure. The researchers found that “in people with normal triglyceride levels, cosmetic surgery made no difference.” However, “among people who started out with high triglycerides, blood tests taken three months after surgery showed a 43% reduction in triglycerides.”

There’s another post from HealthDay as well that reports, “Levels of white blood cells also dipped after liposuction and in patients who had both procedures.” However, “levels of cholesterol and blood sugar didn’t change significantly.”

Triglycerides are a type of lipid found in your blood. When you eat, your body converts any calories it doesn’t need to use right away into triglycerides. The triglycerides are stored in your fat cells. Later, hormones release triglycerides for energy between meals. If you regularly eat more calories than you burn, particularly “easy” calories like carbohydrates and fats, you may have high triglycerides (hypertriglyceridemia). Having a high level of triglycerides, a type of fat (lipid) in your blood, can increase your risk of heart disease.

Fit Better in Your Cute Jeans

There are NEW techniques in liposculpture that offer a gentler, kinder and absolutely safer technique for removing unwanted fat. If this sounds like something you may be interested in, call us to discuss how Tumescent liposculpture assisted by Lipolite laser lipolysis can work for you.

This technique has three important parts:
Step 1: Tumescent fluid is used to bathe the areas to be treated. Tumescent fluid is a very dilute mixture of saline with lidocaine (an anesthetic) and epinephrine (to close off the blood vessels around fat cells). This important step adds additional time and effort on the surgeon’s part but is well worth it for the patients. The use of tumescent anesthetic minimizes bleeding during the procedure making it so much safer. It also decreases bruising and leads to shorter recovery time.

Step 2: Liposculpture is performed with the use of very small “cannulas” or metal tubes. These tubes are as small as the tip on a pen, which is a major advance in technology. They are connected to a suction tube to pull the fat out. Because they are so small, we no longer have to make large openings to do the procedure, so, the scars left are very small. So small, in fact, that they do not even require stitches. This allows us to deliver amazingly precise sculpting minimizing the risk for irregularities (lumpiness) and allows for more smooth results. It also ensures less trauma during the procedure which leads to less bruising and faster recovery.

Step 3: “Lipolite” laser lipolysis – is the latest in laser lipolysis (like Smart Lipo). With Lipolite, a special tiny cannula with a laser tip is inserted in the openings made for liposculpture and the areas are heated using the laser. This provides more coagulation so there is less bleeding, less bruising, faster recovery. Another important advantage is that heating the skin during liposculpture will allow for better skin contraction. For older patients at risk for loose skin after lipo, Lipolite is a major advance.
