Liposuction May Reduce Triglycerides

September 23, 2011

Did you see this latest news from The Los Angeles Times posted today? The “Booster Shots” blog reports that liposuction “may…reduce harmful fat circulating in the blood,” according to research presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Investigators measured “triglyceride levels in” nearly 230 individuals undergoing the procedure. The researchers found that “in people with normal triglyceride levels, cosmetic surgery made no difference.” However, “among people who started out with high triglycerides, blood tests taken three months after surgery showed a 43% reduction in triglycerides.”

There’s another post from HealthDay as well that reports, “Levels of white blood cells also dipped after liposuction and in patients who had both procedures.” However, “levels of cholesterol and blood sugar didn’t change significantly.”

Triglycerides are a type of lipid found in your blood. When you eat, your body converts any calories it doesn’t need to use right away into triglycerides. The triglycerides are stored in your fat cells. Later, hormones release triglycerides for energy between meals. If you regularly eat more calories than you burn, particularly “easy” calories like carbohydrates and fats, you may have high triglycerides (hypertriglyceridemia). Having a high level of triglycerides, a type of fat (lipid) in your blood, can increase your risk of heart disease.

I’ve you have questions about how Liposuction and Liposculpture can help you, please call us at the Scripps Ranch Dermatology and Cosmetic Center or the Dr. Tess Dermatology and Cosmetic Center in La Jolla.

New Show Tackles Taboo Filipino Issues

September 16, 2011

rsvp talk showThis article was written by Yong Chavez for ABS-CBN North America Bureau on September 1st, 2011.

RSVP” is The Filipino Channel’s (TFC) newest US-based weekly talk show and it aims to get their viewers engaged through an honest discussion of issues.

“RSVP” hosts actress G Tongi, Dr. Tess Mauricio and their guests will discuss sensitive issues such as challenges faced by bi-racial Pinoys, Filipinos’ obsession with whitening products, and what people do to be stars in the Philippines.

“We talk about issues that men don’t want to hear and women are too afraid to talk about and that in itself is very intriguing,” said host G Tongi.

“RSVP” is directed by ABS-CBN talent RD Alba and has Michael Carandang, an Emmy Award-winning producer of “The Tyra Banks Show” and “America’s Next Top Model,” as its show runner.

“People ask me all the time, ‘O, you’re going from mainstream to TFC, bakit, why?’ I’m like, ‘Why not?’ I think, Filipinos, it’s a great community here. If you produce a show for them that they love, I think that’s a great accomplishment by itself. I was born in the Philippines. I grew up in the Philippines so to be an immigrant and to move in the US regardless of how successful I’ve become in the US, it means nothing to me and my family if I can’t contribute sa mga Filipinos. TFC has been on for so many years and it cured my homesickness noong nasa Indiana ako,” said Carandang.

It was The Filipino Channel that brought them together.

Mauricio, a highly respected dermatologist in America who has been a guest on US mainstream shows like “The Doctors,” “The Rachel Ray Show” and “America’s Next Top Model” as a beauty expert, sought out Carandang after watching him featured on TFC.

In an episode, Mauricio will share the truths about beauty treatments, including the ones being marketed in the Philippines despite being considered unsafe by heath professionals.

Growing up, Mauricio also struggled with her skin color due to the pressure in the community to be as light-skinned as possible.

“In the Philippines, there’s all this obsession about obtaining white skin, bleaching to a point where it’s really unhealthy both physically, emotionally and psychologically. I was able to share about a topic that’s close to my heart,” Mauricio said.

Their first season’s guest list include notable Filipino and Filipino-American celebrities and also American newsmakers.

One of their upcoming guests is the so-called “Octomom” Nadya Suleman, who opens up like she has never before in her mainstream TV interviews.

G Tongi said she is excited for the chance to pursue an outlet that is very different from acting.

Her fans will also get to see her kids for the first time on the show.

“We did an episode where we discussed being bi-racial. I was really able to talk about that. It was a huge sigh of relief to be able to open up and share that about myself,” said G Tongi.

In their premiere episode on September 10, former Philippine actress Patricia Javier will reveal something personal that she has kept from the public.

Through stories like hers, “RSVP” aims to educate its viewers.

“It’s a talk show that empowers women,” G Tongi explained.

“Gusto namin na yung mga Kapamilya na nanood sa bahay, we want them to follow and watch and listen because a lot of the topics that we discuss this season are topics that we don’t normally feel comfortable talking about as Filipinos. What we did is we highlighted the stories that made us understand the topic a little better,” Carandang said.

Apart from issues, they will also feature high-achieving Filipinos in different fields with expertise to share to Filipinos who want to know how to make it in America.

“We really hope to inspire Filipinos out there to be proud to say they’re Filipinos,” Mauricio said.

“RSVP” will be shown on TFC every Saturday.

Skin Care Questions and Answers

July 31, 2011

mixto fractional co2Are you connected to @drtessmauricio and @skinexpertsays in Twitter? If not, we’ve compiled a list of questions we’ve received recently and the answers to what may also address some of your skin care questions.

Q: What do you think about the co2 fractional treatment?
A: We offer the Mixto Fractional CO2. Definitely one of the best “bang for your buck” type treatments. If you can afford 1-2 weeks of downtime, you can look 10 years younger with this 1 treatment.

Q: How can I fade scarring on a budget? I get brown spots.
A: Microdermabrasion and light peels are great for people on a budget! We offer a great crystal peel with our esthetician.

Q: Regarding peels, how often would I need them? And should I use a hydroquinone cream in conjunction?
A: Treatment can be performed once every 4 weeks, or up to once every week depending on the type of peel. A hydroquinone cream can be used as well but a physician needs to give specific instructions on how to use the cream.

We posted: When washing, massage your face with circular motions. Don’t scrub. Over washing and scrubbing can cause skin to become irritated.
Q: What do you mean by scrubbing? I use apricot scrub would you recommend daily use of it? The brand I use is St.Ives.
A: Using a wash that’s designated as a scrub is different. But the point is don’t over scrub. There are better scrubs than others. St. Ives has large beads, the best scrubs have smaller rounded and smooth beads to not damage the skin.

Q: What do you think is the best single ingredient for anti-aging? Retinol?
A: Hard to choose just one because every ingredient has a specific purpose. Retinol is definitely a great long term anti-aging product.

Q: What’s the best cleanser for oily skin?
A: Any wash with glycolic acid and/or salicylic acid work great for oily skin. If you have moderate to severe acne it is important to be seen by a dermatologist because RX strength products are more effective than OTC products.

Q: Is a mole on your palm normal?
A: Well only a dermatologist can determine if the mole is normal. I suggest you see your dermatologist to check it out. Remember a skin exam is recommended every year!

Q: Laser hair removal is good, is there any side effect with that?
A: Laser Hair Removal can be life changing! With an experienced technician and good technology there is very little risk.

If your questions were not answered here, please call Dr. Tess Mauricio, at one of her three San Diego Dermatology Clinics and talk to her specifically about your needs.
